Research as a Performative Practice

"Research as a performative act in Architecture"
Research for Architecture Domain/RAD
Kyoto - Japan

Among the global economical and social crisis, lack of critical discourse in architecture and institutional criticism, overwhelming copy-paste design projects inserted by corporate offices, pressure on the conditions of immaterial and precarious labor on young architects lead to force the small offices and young architects to create their own multiple design practices and a new understanding in architecture. The forces of economical crisis that influence the built environment, the difficulties of co-existence of small offices and young architects, the consideration of criticality towards institutional policies and mass architectural mainstream offices are some of the urgent reasons that small offices search for new types of practices.

RAD (Research Architecture Domain) established in 2008 by two architects in Kyoto; and recently continues with three architects in a small office that is shared by other cultural activists collectives. Through the obstacles, RAD pursues a collaborative research based practices and searches for new ideas in architectural / design practice as a discursive platform. RAD develops participatory projects, hosts talks/discussions in their small office, new vision on preservation, share and disseminates urban knowledge. Director of RAD Shinichi Kawakatsu explains their practices and projects based in Kyoto.
